Who Is John J. Krueger, MD?

John J. Krueger, MD was an eminent physician and pathologist at Virginia Beach General Hospital from 1964 - 1996. He was the kind of doctor that other doctors looked up to. He had a great wealth of knowledge that was surpassed only by his wisdom, thoughtfulness and good judgement. Many of the staff physicians and surgeons would go to his office early in the morning, review biopsy specimens and discuss difficult cases with him.

As chairman of the VBGH Credentials Committee, he was always very careful about which physicians could be accepted into the medical staff. He insisted that all physicians who received admitting privileges have Board Certification in their specialty. This resulted in a staff that was brilliant and highly qualified, more so than any of the other local hospitals which did not have that requirement.

Dr. Krueger was also quite active in the community. He promoted scholarship, education and collegiality among all students, residents and physicians. His insistence on knowledge, professionalism, community participation and philanthropy inspired all the medical staff to want to emanate those qualities, so much so that when he passed, his peers created and personally funded the Krueger Foundation to promote and foster those virtues.

The John J. Krueger Foundation

The Foundation stands for medical scholarship, professional collegiality and community service and provides scholarships to worthy and exceptional medical students and multiple awards to those who have provided excellent medical and charitable service to the community. We host an Annual Dinner and Lectureship presented by a carefully selected renowned leader, and present the scholarships and awards at that time. Traditionally, every year, the members of the Krueger Foundation thoughtfully select one physician in the area whose life, character and excellence in medicine closely emanates that of Dr. Krueger. That person is then presented with the Physician of the Year award at the Annual Dinner in October.

The Medical Scholars Program is yet another arm of the Foundation partnering with Sentara, local high schools and physicians, promoting early education in the health sciences. More specifically, this Program arranges for upper level high school students to shadow physicians in the community and observe physicians performing various procedures in the hospital or in their offices, again with the intent of broadening the students' education in the health sciences and perhaps enlightening them to consider a future career in medicine and/or related fields.

In summary, the Foundation honors those who have excelled in medical excellence and service, promotes continuation of high quality medical care, fosters the best of medical wisdom, professionalism and compassion for the good of our patients, and helps to protect the future of these values within the health care community.
