Krueger ‘University’ Medical Scholars Program

Instructions for Students

Welcome to the Medical Scholars Program provided by the John J. Krueger, MD Foundation. The purpose of this program is to provide you with the experience of following health professionals as they work in their offices or in the hospital, learn about certain patients, why they are being seen and what the treatment plan will be. We find that students are more likely to learn by actually being in the environment, interacting with patients and their providers, and asking questions. Your enrollment in the Medical Scholars Program at your school is the first step in this process. Currently there are two participating schools - Bayside High School and Norfolk Academy. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions as you go along. Those who ask the most questions are the ones who learn the most.

The following is a step-by-step process so you can be clear on how it works:

  1. Ask your teacher or counsellor about the Medical Scholars Program and find out if you are a candidate. Sign up for whatever bioscience courses that your school has to offer.
  2. Please fill out the Junior Volunteer Paperwork, and turn it in to your school's program coordinator. This will begin to establish you as a Volunteer for Sentara. You will need this designation to be able to enter restricted areas in the hospital and to be able to interact with patients in Sentara facilities.
  3. Register for the KMS Orientation Program where you will receive some basic information, training, a TB skin test and any vaccinations you might need to protect you and prevent spread of certain infections. You will receive a tour of the hospital along with a security badge, which you must wear at all times while in the hospital. A white coat identifying you as a student qualified to be in the Medical Scholars Program will be supplied by your school.
  4. Next, go to the Medical Scholars Calendar and follow the instructions on that page.
  5. When you go to your rotation, you will be greeted at the office or hospital either by your host “Professor,” or by the office staff who will be expecting you. Follow their directions and ask any questions you may have.
  6.  Later, be sure to provide feedback soon after your visit, so we can make  improvements in the program.

Notes:

  • If you forget which doctor(s) you have signed up with, type your name or phone number in the Search Bar at the top of the Calendar.
  • You can also use the Search Bar to type in the category of the doctor you want to visit. For example, type in Cardiology to find doctors in that specialty.

Thank you for your participation in this program. You may schedule as many appointments as you wish, wherever there is an available slot, and depending on how much time you are permitted to be away from your regular classes at your school. Please consider rotating through at least five of the specialties that are available so you get a well-rounded experience and become comfortable inside medical environments. We hope that your multiple experiences here help to broaden your education in the health sciences and perhaps help in your future career choices. Make sure to add your participation here to your resume and/or college application forms. We appreciate the opportunity to help you in whatever way we can.
